Senator Flanagan Visits Setauket To Congratulate Environmental Contest Winners

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently visited the Setauket Elementary School to congratulate two of their classes for their recent efforts in the State Senate’s 16th Annual I*MA*GREEN*NATION" competition. The classes won statewide recognition for their environmentally aware entries into the contest.

Mrs. Kimberly Shaughnessy’s 3rd grade class won second place in the Literature competition in Grades 1-3. Their project was a compilation of poems that were written by the students regarding the environment and recycling.

The twenty-one third graders in Ms. Eileen Liguori’s class were second place finishers in the Grades 1-3 Audio/Video compassion. The class submitted a video for the competition featuring the students.

"To have two winners from the same school in this statewide competition is a tremendous victory for the entire school. There were many worthwhile projects submitted throughout the state and throughout my senate district and I congratulate all of the classes that entered. This contest is about teaching children to respect the Earth and to spread the word that it is all of our responsibility to make sure it lasts a long time," stated Senator Flanagan.

The "I*MA*GREEN*NATION" Awards program was established to promote recycling and conservation and help develop awareness among students from grades one through eight. Further, it facilitates an exchange of ideas about recycling and waste reduction between schools, children and adults and stimulates creative thinking concerning these issues and possible solutions.
