Serrano Demands Middle School In Highbridge
Senator Serrano demanded a new middle school in Highbridge, during a press conference Tuesday, December 11 on the steps of City Hall.
"Right now Highbridge middle school students must cross the Cross Bronx or Grand Concourse, and take at least two buses, just to get a quality education," said the Senator.
"The city says the district has enough seats. Well we know that, one, they're looking at old stats and, two, they are not looking at the future – when our community of young families will be sending ever more kids to New York City public schools."
Highbridge has 40,000 residents and seen the most rapid growth of any community in Bronx Community District 4. A grassroots coalition led by United Parents of Highbridge has pushed the NYC Department of Education and the School Construction Authority to incorporate a middle school into the upcoming five-year capital plan.
"There cannot be two sets of standards for education. City officials have to step out of their ivory towers and do what is right for the people of this community," said the Senator.
"With the five-year capital plan on the horizon, now is the time for them not only to listen, but to take action, and give our kids the educational access they deserve."
