Serrano Office Helps Out The Youth

José M. Serrano

The Serrano office participated in the "Youth 2 Youth" Town Hall at the Washington Community Center in East Harlem on Friday evening.

The event's primary mission was to help address topics of most interest to youth. Workshops were provided on topics such as undocumented students and the DREAM act, peer pressure and gender issues, college access and applications, and racism and harassment in schools.

All workshops were developed, coordinated, and facilited by youth.

Serrano Community Relations Associate, Annette Negron, attended the college workshop. She briefed participants on "Yes! You Can Go to College," a comprehensive packet of financial aid and academic support programs for low-income New Yorkers.

Twenty-five high school students attended the workshop, which was organized by two college students -- Yobe Qiu from New School University and Jian Liu from the Student Teacher Academy at City College -- and Alythia Cruz, Program Coordinator of the Union Works High School Program.

The "Youth 2 Youth" Town Hall was co-sponsored by Union Settlement Union Works, United Neighborhood Houses, Asian American Student Advocacy Project Coalition for Asian Americian Children and Families, the NY State Youth Leadership Council and the New York Immigration Coalition.
