Summer Luau At The Reece School

Senator Serrano toured The Reece School on August 8. He observed the programs offered at the school, and joined the students at their end-of-summer Luau.

He praised Thomas R. Colasuonno, Executive Director, for his inspired leadership. "The staff and administration do an extraordinary job providing educational services in our community," the Senator said.

The Reece School , founded in 1948 by Ellen Rice is a private, state-supported school under contract to the City of New York to provide special education services to psychologically fragile elementary age children from throughout the five boroughs.

Thanks to assistance from the Senator and his staff, children at the Reese School were fortunate this summer to participate in the New York Department of Parks and Recreation Therapeutic Swim Program, at its Highbridge Pool facility.

The program served a number of needs for the children of Reece. They learned to swim, had the opportunity to exercise, and practiced social skills on the playground.

The Reece School serves children with speech impairments, learning disabilities and those exhibiting emotional problems which preclude their entrance into the public education system.

Reece students are exposed to the full New York State curriculum, and also receive a comprehensive series of related services in the areas of occupational therapy, speech and counseling – both programmatically and by prescription according to their individual education programs.
