Senator Parker Appointed As New Whip For Senate Democratic Conference

Brooklyn, NY – Saying he is "honored to be given an important leadership position in the Senate Democratic Conference," State Senator Kevin Parker (D-Brooklyn) graciously accepted his appointment as Minority Whip for 2007-2008 by Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith (D-Queens).

"In my first two terms in the Senate, I have represented the people of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Ditmas Park, Kensington and Boro Park to the best of my ability. The responsibility that comes with being the Minority Whip means not only a greater responsibility to the 21st District where I grew up, but to all New Yorkers," Senator Parker said.

The Brooklyn lawmaker noted he will have increased interaction with his 27 Senate Democratic colleagues who represent areas stretching from Niagara Falls to Queens. "Senate Democrats represent the cities, the suburbs and of the most rural areas of New York State. Senator Smith and I understand the challenges that face all regions of this great state. As such, I will play an essential role in communicating our message of economic growth, fiscal responsibility and prosperity to all New Yorkers," Senator Parker said.

Since taking office in 2002 Senator Parker has been a tireless advocate for economic and small business development, immigration, and parental involvement. A product of the New York City Public School system, he attended P.S. 193, Andries Hudde J.H.S. 240 and Midwood High School and is a graduate of Penn State University. Prior to taking office, he was a liaison between former New York State Comptroller H. Carl McCall and city, state and federal elected officials, as well as unions, community-based organizations and constituents.

In the private sector, he worked at Painewebber on broad issues of importance to the financial service industry. He has also served as a professor of African-American Studies and Political Science at several public and private colleges.

This position as Minority Whip is his second such special appointment during his tenure in the Senate. In his second term, Senator Parker was appointed Chairman of the Task Force on New Americans by then Democratic Leader David Paterson. In the November 2006 elections, Senator Parker was reelected as the representative of the 21st District by an overwhelming majority.
