Golden Urges Store Owners Not To Sell Spray Paint And Markers To Minors In The Fight Against Graffiti
Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn), a former New York City Police Officer, today is announcing that he has written to all local hardware and paint stores, urging their strict adherence to the law governing the sale of spray paint, markers and etching acid to minors. Senator Golden was sparked to issue this reminder to local stores due to a recent increase in the presence of graffiti on properties throughout the neighborhood.
Senator Golden cited New York City Graffiti law in his letter which states, "No person shall sell or offerto sell an aerosol spray can, [or] broad tipped indelible marker or etching acid to any person under eighteen years of age."
Senator Golden stated, "New York City’s Graffiti law is a law that when it is not adhered to, like another laws, greatly effects the quality of life of the entire community. That is why as we enter the Spring season, as we approach the holidays of Easter and Passover, we must insure that spray paint, markers and other articles that damage property and can be used to create symbols of religious intolerance within our community, are restricted in their sales."
Golden continued, "I am hopeful that the store owners will take serious this reminder and look forward to their cooperation. Together, our efforts will allow for our community to look its best and we will see a decline in the destruction of our property."
Violations of this law, regarding sales, are subject to fines up to $500. Graffiti vandalism is a crime punishable by a jail term, monetary fine or community service.
Senator Marty Golden is also encouraging local residents to contact his office to request graffiti removal. Senator Golden is in the current planning stages of a graffiti cleanup and has available in his office the official waivers necessary to be completed for removal of graffiti on local stores.
