Senator Golden Announces Local Winners In Statewide Environmental Contest

Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) today announced that twenty six local students have won statewide recognition for environmental awareness through the State Senate’s annual "I*MA*GREEN*NATION" competition.

"Our local winners competed against hundreds of students from throughout New York State, and their imaginative ideas and displays were judged to be among the best in this year’s contest," said Senator Golden. "I know that our entire community shares my pride in these young people who have shown a remarkable awareness and concern for the important environmental challenges that we all face to make our state a better, cleaner place. It is even more evident that I.S. 30 and P.S. 222 are home to our future leaders."

The statewide competition pitted students from Grades One through Eight against other schools for presentation of ideas and solutions to the problems of solid waste reduction and encouraging recycling. Entries were judged for imagination, subject matter and creativity.

Locally, winners were selected from P.S. 222 and included Jason Rosenblum, Raqeeb Adewunmi, Latrice Bastien, Christina Colasuonno, Faiza Fadhl, Jovani Figueroa, Thomas Flood, Peter Gancitano, Emilia Giannakouros, George Giannakouros, Maya Gonzalez, MacKenzie Hallahan, Gaelle Jean Baptiste, Christian Mateo, Brendan Mayers, Kevin McCaffrey, Daniel Miranda, Raphael Mordokh, Joanna Mulvey, Michael Nikityuk, Jaclyn Rodriguez, Kevin Senatus, Christopher Slatus, Hulya Uzuner, and Jessica Zavalunova.

From I.S. 30, the winner was Amanda Ballenger.

A reception and awards ceremony for the winners will be held at the state Capitol on Tuesday, May 15th. Amanda Ballenger and members of her family and class visited the State Capitol. The winning entries, as well as all other participating projects, will be on public display.
