Senator Golden Names Visitation Academy Student "State Senator For A Day"

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, 22nd District) recently hosted the contest ceremony for his Senator For A Day Contest at the Knights of Columbus, and is announcing that the winner of the 2007 Senator for a Day Contest is Visitation Academy’s Kara Reilly.

This contest invited local school children of Region 6 and Region 7 to write essays no more than 250-words which began with the phrase, "If I were a State Senator for A Day...".

Throughout the essay, the students write about issues facing the community such as public safety, park improvements, educational improvements. The winning essays were judged on content, creativity and presentation.

Pat Russo, former Counsel to the New York State Inspector General, Joel Garson, former member of Community School Board 22 and Publisher of "Our News", Kate Pezzimenti a Reporter with News 12, and Tom Kane, of the Brooklyn Theater Arts Project and the Brooklyn Eagle, served as the contest judges.

The winner of the contest, Kara Reilly, discussed numerous issues in her essay entitled "Preserving My City, If I Were Senator for a Day" which she would tackle as Senator such as cleaing the parks, insuring the safety of students, and stocking the libraries with the finest books. Kara’s class will now be invited to Albany to see the legislative process in action and will be given a tour of the State Capitol.
