Senator Golden Partners With Lutheran Family Health Center To Offer Free Prostate Cancer Screenings For Men Of Our Community

Martin J. Golden

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) today is announcing an important upcoming health care event, partnered with Lutheran Family Health Center, to offer free PSA and DRE Prostate Cancer Screenings for men of our community. Dr. Gary Lodin will be administering the testing.

Senator Golden and Lutheran Family Health Centers will host the screening, at no cost, on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sunset Park Family Health Center’s Specialty Clinic, Station 14 located at 150-55th Street in Brooklyn. Those attending should enter at the Family Health Center entrance on 55th Street and should bring proper identification. No appointments are necessary and the screenings are on a first come-first served basis.

Senator Marty Golden stated, "As we continue to learn of the horrific realities and effects of prostate cancer on men within our society, we are reminded that a most important component in the fight against this disease is early detection. I thank Lutheran Family Health Centers for their partnership, and I applaud the dedication Dr. Gary Lodin, for offering this service free of charge to the men of our community. By hosting this event, we are eliminating any financial barriers that may prevent testing, and we put back on the radar screen the importance of these screenings so to remind our fathers, our grandfathers, our brothers, our uncles, and our friends and colleagues, to get tested."

The American Cancer Society recommends that both the PSA and DRE should be offered to all men beginning at the age of 50, who have at least a 10-year life expectancy. Men at high risk such as African-American men and men with a strong family history of one ore more first-degree relatives diagnosed at an early age, should begin testing at age 45.
