Senator Golden Statement On Caravan For Kids

Martin J. Golden

Senator Marty Golden today issued the followed statement on the Caravan For Kids Campaign planned visit to his Brooklyn District Office:

“Thank you for coming by my office during the Caravan for Kids. I want you to know that insuring a quality education for our children is something that is very important to me. That’s why I worked last year to secure passage of capital funding for the construction of new schools, including a needed high school in Sunset Park, as well as soon to be announced and proposed school expansion projects.

As I indicated when I met with representatives of the Campaign For Fiscal Equity, I believe that the funding level proposed by the Governor in his proposed budget is a starting point. That’s why I joined with my colleagues to support a budget plan that provides even more money to our state’s schools.

The budget plan that the State Senate approved adds $358 million to the Governor’s plan. If our plan is approved by the Assembly and the Governor, it would represent the largest school aid increase in the history of the state. We believe that this will meet the mandate of the Court of Appeals in CFE v. New York State.

The Senate plan provides support for special education, additional funds for school districts that are experiencing rapid growth, and supports the Governor’s plan for more funding for textbooks and school libraries.

I know that making our public schools the best they can be is important to the future of our children and our state. We need to make sure that our children can realize all of their potential. Working together, I know we can make this happen.”
