Senator Saland Announces Passage Of Legislation To Notify Parents Regarding Traffic Infractions Of Young Drivers
Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced passage of his bill to require local courts to notify parents that their child, who holds a junior driver’s license or a learner’s permit, has committed a traffic infraction. It also requires that the notice inform parents they have the right to withdraw their consent for their child to continue to hold a junior license or permit.
"When a teenager holding a learner's permit or junior license commits a traffic infraction, it could indicate a lack of experience, maturity or ability," said Senator Saland. "Many parents are unaware they are allowed to withdraw consent to their child holding a junior license or permit. Young drivers are the most likely to be involved in car accidents -- parents need to know they have the option to withdraw consent to drive if they feel it is appropriate for their child," added Saland.
The bill has been sent to the Assembly for consideration.
