Senator Steve Saland Today Announced State Grants For Local Governments And Community Organizations

Stephen M. Saland

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that the New York State Archives, in conjunction with the Local Government Records Advisory Council, has awarded Local Government Records Grants in Columbia County. The grants are funded through fees paid when documents are filed or recorded with county clerks.

"So much of the rich and diverse history of our State is found in records stored by local governments and community organizations," said Senator Saland. "From paper ledgers that are hundreds of years old to sophisticated geographic information systems, these records form the fabric of our past and they are too important to lose. Additionally, local governments need to be able to improve their records management in order to serve the public better," Saland continued.

The following grants were awarded in Columbia County:

City of Hudson -- $13,731

Columbia-Greene Community College -- $26,000

Hudson Housing Authority -- $4,897

Town of Greenport -- $4,407

Town of Kinderhook -- $4,688

Village of Kinderhook -- $4,026

Local governments use these grants to improve records management systems, while other grants ensure that New York's history is preserved and provide hands-on experience for school children. For more information regarding the New York State Archives, please go to www.archives.nysed.gov.
