Marcellino And Paterson Say No To Broadwater

Carl L Marcellino

Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset) today thanked Governor David Paterson for his opposition to the Broadwater project, a proposed floating liquefied natural gas barge in Long Island Sound.

"All of us across Long Island – who greatly value the Sound’s ecological significance and its contribution to the region’s quality of life and to the regional economy have been waiting for this day. I am pleased that Governor Paterson has joined forces with residents, environmentalists and numerous public officials to say no to Broadwater. Broadwater will not solve Long Island’s energy needs. In fact, Broadwater is a potential environmental disaster which could erase all the strides we have made cleaning up the Sound. I appreciate his leadership on this issue," said Senator Carl L. Marcellino Chairman of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee.

"Today, we were concerned about Broadwater Energy. However, it is only a matter of time until other multinational corporations decide to do something similar. They now know that New Yorkers will stand together to be the ones to decide how our natural resources are protected and how we fulfill our own energy needs," said Senator Marcellino.

Numerous environmental concerns have been raised regarding the project including the disturbance of 7,000 square feet of sea floor on which the vessel will be anchored and a 25 mile ditch along the bottom of the Sound to accommodate pipeline connections. In addition, tankers traveling in and out of the Sound two to three times a week will bring in added pollution while industrializing the horizon like never seen before. A "no public access zone" of 1.5 square miles would have surrounded the LNG terminal. Which meant that for the first time in the Sound’s history parts of the Sound would be inaccessible to the public.
