Sen. Fuschillo Tours South Nassau Hospital's New Cardiac Care Center
State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), State Senator Dean Skelos (9th Senate District) and Assemblyman Robert Barra (14th Assembly District) recently visited South Nassau Communities Hospital to view the progress of the Hospital’s new Center for Cardiovascular Health. Senators Fuschillo and Skelos secured $500,000 in state funding to help offset the costs of the project.
"South shore residents will be able to receive cardiac care services and treatments, which previously required trips to the north shore or New York City, much closer to home. This expands access to vital and potentially lifesaving health care services to the residents of our communities," said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate's Health Committee.
With the first phase of construction completed, the Center now includes two digital cardiac catheterization rooms, 18 dedicated preparation/recovery rooms, examination rooms, and family waiting areas. The hospital estimates that over 1,300 patients are expected to be served by the Center in 2008.
Once construction on the second phase is completed, the entire Center will house three digital cardiac catheterization labs, an electrophysiology lab, 18 dedicated preparation/recovery rooms, two nursing stations, exam rooms, and a family waiting area.
South Nassau Communities Hospital, located in Oceanside, is a 441 bed not-for-profit hospital serving the residents of the south shore. The hospital is recognized for its outstanding cardiac care program. Coronary angioplasty, an interventional procedure that opens blocked arteries in the heart without the use of invasive surgery, has been available at South Nassau on an emergency basis since 2000. Research has shown that angioplasty significantly increases a heart attack patient’s chances of survival. South Nassau Communities Hospital has been authorized by the New York State Department of Health to perform angioplasty on an elective basis, one of only a few community hospitals in the State, and the only one in Nassau County, to receive that designation.
