Senator Fuschillo Honors Merrick-north Merrick Little League’s State Championship Softball Team In Albany

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently welcomed players and coaches from the Merrick-North Merrick Little League 9 and 10 year-old girls softball team to the State Capitol in Albany, where they were honored for capturing the 2007 New York State Championship.
“Through teamwork, dedication, and many hours of practice, these girls and their coaches brought home the Merrick-North Merrick Little League’s first state softball championship and earned the top spot among an elite group of teams from across New York State,” said Senator Fuschillo. “I hope the team enjoyed their visit to Albany and their much deserved moment in the spotlight.”
The team started their day in Albany with a tour of the New York State museum followed by lunch in the state legislative office building with Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman Dave McDonough (19th Assembly District). Afterwards, they took a private tour of the New York State Capitol and met with Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.
The final event of the day was the team receiving special recognition on the floor of the New York State Senate during a Senate session, where a resolution sponsored by Senator Fuschillo in honor of the team’s achievement was read aloud into the Senate record.
The Merrick-North Merrick team completed the summer tournament season with a perfect record of 11-0, outscoring their opponents by a combined total of 126-25 and beat Half Hollow Hills by a score of 10-0 to win the Long Island championship. The girls then defeated teams from Brewster and New City in the state championship tournament to win the state title.
The team was led by manager Lou Eiler and coaches Denise Savarese, Don Calagna, and Dave Marcello. Brianna Biancardi, Maria Batas, Rachel Calagna, Lauren Trimarco, Lauren Sustad, Allison Jones, Kathryn Eiler, Meredith Jones, Lauren Savarese, Ally Marcello, and Taylor Catalano were all members of the championship team.
