Statement By State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

"I am pleased that Governor Spitzer has finally chosen to listen to the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers and has decided to abandon his misguided and dangerous driver’s license plan.

The Governor’s plan would have jeopardized the safety and security of New Yorkers and other Americans and directly conflicts with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s opposition to giving drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens.

As the most important document the government issues to establish one’s identity, a driver’s license is a key that can open many doors. We have made great progress on security issues since 9/11 and we must continue to ensure the security and integrity of a New York driver’s license.

New York State is not a dictatorship. The Governor is elected to serve the people. During his campaign, Mr. Spitzer promised that he would conduct the state’s business in a public and open manner. His driver’s license plan, however, was conceived in a shroud of darkness with no input from the public or state legislators. With nearly three-quarters of New Yorkers, and elected representatives from both sides of the aisle opposing the plan, the Governor can no longer ignore our views."
