Nys Senator Eric Adams Will Hold A Press Conference With An Attorney Representing A Group Of Nyc Correction Officers Who Charge That The Nyc Department Of Correction Is Violating
New York State Senator Eric Adams (D, Brooklyn) will hold a press conference with a group of NYC Correction Officers and their attorney Royce Russell. Attorney Russell will report on a complaint filed with the NYC Commission on Human Rights that details the failure of the Department of Correction to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Although the officers listed in the complaint have conditions that should qualify them under the “reasonable accommodations” language of the Act, they have received no benefits, thus violating their rights.
Senator Adams states: “The group of Correction Officers here today has been denied protection under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The language of this civil rights law prohibits the discrimination that results when an employer fails to make reasonable accommodations for disabled employees. The rigorous training of Correction Officers has resulted in a historic decrease in violent incidents in our jails. The Department of Correction website trumpets this remarkable achievement while denying the rights of the officers responsible for accomplishing it.”
