Senator Farley Delivers Capital Grants For Local Organizations

State Senator Hugh T. Farley today announced Senate approval of capital construction grants for several local governments and non-profit organizations in his four-county Senate District. This week, the Senate passed a resolution allocating economic development funds which had been included in the 2008-2009 budget.

"Particularly during these times of fiscal stringency, it is important that taxpayer money is carefully invested to create jobs and preserve communities," Senator Farley said. "These have been identified as high-value projects by people in our local communities."

Projects receiving Senate funding in Saratoga and Schenectady Counties are:

Village of Corinth ($350,000). A February 2008 fire destroyed a highly visible block of businesses in Corinth. These funds will help the community to rebuild.

Union College ($300,000). Union will be constructing a new integrated science and engineering building, continuing to emphasize Schenectady as a prime location for training high technology workers.

Schenectady Museum ($250,000). The museum will be constructing a new facility in downtown Schenectady, which is expected to draw visitors from throughout the region.

Projects receiving Senate funding in Montgomery and Fulton Counties are:

Village of Canajoharie ($500,000). Canajoharie is rehabilitating its downtown area to attract tourists and shoppers, diversifying the local economy in anticipation of the move of the BeechNut manufacturing plant.

City of Amsterdam ($75,000): Amsterdam will use the funds for improvements to the stadium and ballfield at Shuttleworth Park.

Fulton-Montgomery Community College ($250,000). The college will replace deteriorated 40-year-old classroom equipment, such as student desks and chairs.

Johnstown Water Department ($350,000). Johnstown needs to construct a covered water tank at its reservoir in order to meet federal and State water quality standards. This will ensure continued drinking water and water for fire protection.

Fulton County Economic Development Corporation ($250,000). Funding will go toward Phase 2 of the conversion of the Estee School into senior citizens apartments, bringing more people and retail customers into downtown Gloversville.

Nathan Littauer Hospital ($250,000). Fulton County's only hospital will use the grant to expand their emergency room, renovate their maternity unit, and acquire radiology equipment.
