Alesi Bill To Give Local Towns Greater Oversight On Speed Limits Passes Senate

Senator Jim Alesi (R- Perinton) today announced that the State Senate has passed his bill (S.4322-A) which would allow certain towns in Monroe County to establish town-wide speed limits of twenty-five miles per hour.

“The purpose of this legislation is to provide for safer streets by allowing certain towns to lower speed limits,” said Senator Alesi. “More and more towns are finding that the current speed limit of 30 miles per hour is much too fast for newly developed subsections.”

Currently, New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits setting area-wide speed limits below 30 miles per hour, except within school zones where 15 miles per hour is permissible. For many parts of Monroe County’s streets, 30 miles per hour is simply too fast. The bill, introduced by Senator Alesi, would allow the towns of Brighton, Greece, Ogden, Webster, Penfield and Irondequoit to authorize a maximum speed limit of not less than 25 miles per hour.

“Local towns should be able to set more appropriate limits that protect children and all pedestrians,” said Senator Alesi. “By authorizing certain towns in Monroe County to set reduced speed limits will ultimately save lives, make streets safer, decrease noise and vibration and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.”

The bill passed the Senate and was sent to the Assembly.
