Seward Announces Cooperstown Arts Award

In Cooperstown today Senator James L. Seward announced a senate grant of $10,000 for the Cooperstown Concert Series, which offers musical entertainment to Cooperstown and its environs. The funding will help offset artists' fees incurred by the organization as it provides a variety of musical, theatrical and dance performances to the public.

"The senate funding will help a vital local arts program and meets locally identified community needs that would not be possible without state assistance," Senator Seward said. "You have to do something when the mercury drops and the snow blows in upstate New York, and getting together at the school for a concert or performance is a great way to socialize and take advantage of cultural opportunities."

Seward said the money was itemized in the state budget under new disclosure rules, and is intended to help local programs.

The Cooperstown Concert Series is a voluntary organization entering its 39th season. Organizers offer six or more concerns per year to an audience averaging 200. Complimentary tickets are often provided to youth groups and senior citizens. Its annual budget is $30,000.

"The concerts are a nice complement to Cooperstown's museums, Glimmerglass Opera and other area arts offerings. Arts programs enrich our lives, and I am glad that the senate could assist," Seward concluded.

Previous offerings have included the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, HOE Bluegrass, Irish Christmas in America, and David Demsey Jazz Quartet.
