Seward: Hudson Correctional Stays Open

Senator James L. Seward today announced that the Hudson Correctional Facility will remain open as a result of final budget negotiations, despite the proposal by former Governor Eliot Spitzer to close it and three other correctional facilities.

"Even though the facility is in Columbia County, this is good news for Greene County and those who work at the facility or are affected by it in some way, because a large number of the employees are from Greene County," said Senator Seward. "Hudson is key because of its significance to the economy of the community and its role within the correctional services system. My senate Republican colleagues and I have been successful in defeating the governor's plan, and we will continue to stand with the men and women and their families who serve our state in correctional services."

Had the governor's plan been unchanged, many area families would have faced relocation.

Seward cited the efforts of the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) in assisting the legislature in making its case to keep Hudson open.

The legislature restored $8 million to the budget to maintain the four facilities.
