Bonacic: Senate Advances Accountability Measures
State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/I/C - Mount Hope) announced today that the Senate Majority has advanced a package of "Accountability in Government Spending" bills designed to save taxpayer money, reduce government waste, and ensure greater transparency throughout State government.
Senator Bonacic said that this package of bills includes the Senate bill recently approved by the Senate, of a Constitutional spending cap, all of which aim to reign in spending and save hardworking families from an escalating tax burden.
"Every level of government should be held accountable as they are funded with tax dollars," stated Senator Bonacic. "As lawmakers, we should make sure there is openness and appropriate scrutiny."
The provisions of the "Accountability in Government Spending" measures include:
Senate bill 6358 requires all Executive State entities and the Judiciary to compile andrelease public expenditure reports.
Senate bill 154-A requires all State agencies and authorities to develop long-term strategic plans, follow performance budgeting principles, and enable the public, the Division of Budget and the Legislature to evaluate the fiscal management and performance of government programs.
Senate bill 7134 limits year to year spending increases to 120 percent of the Consumer Price Index or 4 percent, whichever is less.
"Taxpayers have every right to expect that their government operates openly and efficiently. It is my hope the Assembly and Governor can come to the table and support these comprehensive bills that will help New Yorkers," concluded Senator Bonacic.
