State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/I/C - Mount Hope) announced that he is seeking student entries for the 17th Annual I*MA*GREEN*NATION Celebration, a statewide competition that focuses on environmental problems and solutions.

The Senate-sponsored competition is open to students in grades one through eight, and includes an awards presentation at the State Capitol in Albany on Tuesday May 20, 2008. Winners will receive award medals, view submissions by their fellow students from around the State and have the opportunity to tour the historic Capitol.

"I encourage all of the eligible students to enter this contest. This is a great way to learn to appreciate the world around us. In the past, students have inspired us all to change the way we view the environment and its importance," stated Senator Bonacic.

Senator Bonacic said that last year, 600 projects were submitted that explored issues relating to solid waste and recycling, and more than 1,200 students and their teachers traveled to the Capital to participate in the competition events and celebration.

Schools that would like to participate in this year’s event must register by March 7th, and the entry deadline is March 30th. "I have sent a registration packet to all of the elementary schools in the 42nd Senate District and hope many will join the competition," continued Senator Bonacic.

Senator Bonacic concluded, "Our students are our future leaders and their projects can have a profound impact on making New York a cleaner, greener State. I look forward to seeing their creative ideas."

If your school has not received a packet, additional registration materials are available by calling Darlene in my Albany office at (518) 455-3181.
