Senator Serrano Honored By Hope Community, Inc.

José M. Serrano

On May 22, Senator Serrano received the annual Community Service Award from Hope Community, the long-standing East Harlem organization committed to affordable housing development and management, and community building. The Senator was cited for his continued efforts to further the economic and cultural revitalization of East Harlem.

During his remarks, the Senator discussed his legislative initiatives, including a bill that would penalize landowners who speculate on vacant properties in the neighborhood.

"Wealthy investors must understand that the people of Northern Manhattan will not continue to be neglected," said the Senator. "We must ensure that private companies that own property in this neighborhood treat the people who live here with the respect they deserve."

The Senator said the fight for affordable housing remains his top priority. In addition to crafting progressive legislation in Albany, he has also pressured city, state and federal housing agencies to enforce existing laws and statutes.

The Senator is also one of Albany's most vocal defenders of the arts and arts education. "Protecting and promoting our cultural heritage through the arts is an integral part of community development," he said. "In this, and so many other areas, I consider HOPE Community a valuable partner and ally."
