Senator Serrano Hosts The East Harlem Arts Weekend
Senator Serrano co-hosted the East Harlem Arts Weekend on May 16-May 18. Despite the inclement weather, the weekend was a great success. The event was co-hosted by Community Board 11 and Art for Change.
"This is a weekend designed to empower artists," said the Senator, who is Chair of the Senate Democratic Task Force on the Arts. "The arts are vital to a good education, a strong economy and a prosperous neighborhood. Particularly in an area as culturally rich as East Harlem, the possibilities are endless."
Saturday saw the Arts Symposium which celebrated the historic role played by the arts in defining East Harlem. It was followed by break-out sessions that discussed strategies for small arts organizations and individual/freelancing artists.
"I want to provide the resources and foster the connections that will breathe new life into the arts and culture in East Harlem, and across New York State," said the Senator.
On Sunday, the 5th annual Arts Festival was held on 106th Street. Despite some inclement weather, area artists displayed their work, as community members and residents from across the city browsed the selections, and enjoyed live music and delicious food.
"Albany has yet to appreciate the true value of the arts," said Senator Serrano. "Investing in the arts pays dividends for community development."
