Senator Serrano Turns On New Traffic Light At Busy Intersection

 
"When I met with these students in May, I was so impressed by their understanding and determination. We brainstormed ways to collaborate on the traffic light issue, and work toward this goal for the community," said the Senator. "Today is a celebration not just of the traffic light, but of their organizing efforts."
 
Third Avenue has long been recognized as one of the most dangerous thoroughfares in East Harlem, with wide distances between crosswalks. Automobile traffic at 101st Street was particularly fast in the absence of a street light.
 
"This is a critical intersection for kids at Washington Houses who attend school and extra-curricular programs on Lexington Avenue," said the Senator.
 
He added: "I will continue to fight not just for traffic-calming measures, but also those measures that significantly reduce auto emissions in my district. We have too many trucks, too much asthma, and it's past time that our kids should breathe easy in their own community."
