Serrano Attends Dream School Opening
Senator José M. Serrano celebrated the opening of the DREAM Charter School in East Harlem. The DREAM School, developed by local community-based organization Harlem RBI, will serve children grades K-8 and their families.
The Senator, who was joined by community and elected leaders, as well as New York Mets Center Fielder Carlos Beltran, welcomed students at the beginning of the school's first year.
"Harlem RBI has a long-standing commitment to this community," Senator Serrano said. "The staff and administration understand the neighborhood and they understand what the children in East Harlem need."
The Senator, who is a member of the Senate Education and Higher Education committees, also voiced praise for various curricular and extra-curricular programs the school will offer.
"I am especially pleased to see an emphasis on ESL programs," said the Senator. "It shows a deep understanding of the unique linguistic and cultural needs of East Harlem."
The Senator also used the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to ensuring that all students in New York State have access to a quality education.
"I will continue to advocate in Albany for better-funded schools that extend the promise of America to every child who walks through the doors," said the Senator. "This is a fight we cannot afford to lose."
