SENATOR GOLDEN ANNOUNCES CELEBRITY JUDGE FOR UPCOMING SENIOR IDOL CONTEST

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn), the Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee, is announcing that the former lead singer of Journey, Steve Augeri, will serve as the celebrity judge in Brooklyn 1st Senior Idol Contest sponsored by AARP Chapter #5055, to be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 8:00 p.m. at Xaverian High School located at 7100 Shore Road in Brooklyn. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Senator Marty Golden stated, "This very unique event will surely be a star studded and it is very exciting that a man who has made a mark in the music industry, will join us as we select Brooklyn’s first Senior Idol. Steve hails from Bensonhurst and attended Public School 48. It is most fitting that we have home grown talent, a man who has awed many on the stage throughout the country and the world, as part of this selection. I look forward to sharing the Judge’s table with him, Councilman Gentile and Xaverian Music Director Joseph Loposky."

Steve Augeri was born in Brooklyn on January 30, 1959. Steve was the lead vocalist in Tall Stories, who released a single self-titled album in 1991. He went on to sing with Tyketto for their 1995 album, Shine. Augeri retired from music in the mid-1990’s after Tall Stories ran out of momentum. He was working at a Gap store when Journey guitarist Neal Schon came into contact with a demo tape of Augeri's. Journey was, at the time, looking for new lead singer after the loss of Steve Perry who had left the band following their brief mid-1990s reunion due to touring conflicts and health issues.

Journey hired Steve Augeri in 1998. Augeri's debut with the band was on the single "Remember Me" from the Armageddon movie soundtrack. He then appeared on the album Arrival, the Red 13 EP, and the Generations album. Augeri suffered ongoing voice problems during Journey's 2006 tour.

Radio celebrity Joe Franklin, "Memory Lane", will be the Master of Ceremonies. The winner of the Senior Idol will be awarded a prize of $250 donated by Commerce Bank. The event will feature a special performance by the Xaverian Barbershop Quartet. Tickets are available for $10.00 at the door and information is available by calling (917) 476-8751.
