SENATOR GOLDEN SAYS "LOWER YOUR AUTO INSURANCE COSTS BY COMPLETING THE POINT INSURANCE REDUCTION PROGRAM"

In an effort to save New Yorker’s money on automobile insurance, Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) is encouraging drivers who have not completed a Point and Insurance Reduction Program to do in an effort to lower auto insurance costs. New York State drivers that complete a Department of Motor Vehicle approved course will have as many as four points reduced on their driving record, and will receive a minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of their liability and collision insurance premium each year for three years.

"We all must do more with less. New York State just reduced its budget like many of New York’s families during these challenging economic times. That is why I think every driver should take one of these courses. The bottom line is that it improves safety and saves drivers money. A 10 % reduction for three years means more money for you," said Senator Golden.

Each course is at least six hours and is presented in one or more classroom sessions. The cost of the course varies from sponsor to sponsor, and there is no formal testing required to complete the course. Information on how to take the Point Insurance Reduction Program is available at any Department of Motor Vehicles Office or online at www.nydmv.state.ny.us.

"The time spent on a defensive driving course, is time well spent. Every driver can always use a refresher course on the rules of the road while at the same time earning a reduction in your insurance costs. That money can be spent by motorists on other expenses such as education, mortgage, rent and other family and living expenses" continued Senator Golden.

"There is another reason to take these courses. If you accumulate 11 or more points in an 18 month period, a driver will be called to a DMV hearing. They could suspend or revoke your license. These courses reduce the number of points on your license. This course could mean the difference of being able or not able to drive," concluded Senator Golden.
