Senator Golden To Host Special Education Fair For Community Children

SENATOR GOLDEN TO HOST SPECIAL EDUCATION FAIR FOR COMMUNITY’S CHILDREN

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) is today announcing that he will be hosting a special education fair for families and students of School District 20, 21 and 22 on Saturday, October 18, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Marine & Academic Center Rotunda at Kingsborough Community College located at 2001 Oriental Boulevard in Brooklyn.

The event will feature presentations and remarks by the following:

1) Carol Greenburg, Executive Director, Brooklyn Special Needs Consulting

"Victory at Your I.E.P."

2) Benjamin Fox, Social Skills Consultant District 75 and Pace University

"Out and About With Your Autistic Child"

3) Mark Surabian, Founder/Director Cognitech Cafe

"What is Assisted Technology?"

4) Kim Sweet, Advocates for Children of New York

"Look, I’m in College"

5) Dorothy E. Siegel, ASD Nest Program and

Project Director NYU Institute for Education and Social Policy

"Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Overview"

Representatives from parent advocacy groups, city and state agencies, and national associations including the Bronx Chapter of the Autism Society of America, Blink Twice, Brooklyn Special Needs Consulting, Cognitech Cafe, New York City Department of Health Early Intervention Office, the New York City Department of Education, Parent-to-Parent New York, Brooklyn Services for the Blind, Bumpy Books, the Cerebral Palsy Association of New York State, the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York, VESID Brooklyn, Theracare, Blink Twice, 1-2-3 Let’s Play, and many other organizations will be on hand to answer questions and provide information.

Senator Marty Golden stated, "As a member of the State Senate Education Committee who has worked very closely with our schools and our parents for many years, I have discovered the need to host this special education fair to address the needs, to provide the information, and to allow for the best opportunities for our children who require special education. I think it is important for parents to understand how to access the services that are available to them in an effort to benefit their children. I look forward to hosting this event that will help our children learn and grow and better access the services our children require and should be receiving."
