Senator Saland Says Thanks To All Who Attended His 16th Annual Golden Gathering

Stephen M. Saland

A big draw at the event is always different types of free health screenings. The National Kidney Foundation, in conjunction with the Columbia-Greene Dialysis Center screened more than 40 people for kidney disease and found that 6 needed further follow up. The Columbia County Department of Health administered 371 free flu shots. Diabetes…Take Charge performed approximately 150 blood glucose tests and found four people with possible undiagnosed diabetes. Ophthalmologists, assisted by medical students from Albany Medical College screened approximately 50 people for glaucoma and found roughly 15 with possible undiagnosed glaucoma.

In addition to free health testing, approximately 70 exhibitors offered seniors a wide range of information regarding health care, housing options, library services, fitness and much more. Seniors could check to see if the State is holding any unclaimed funds from long lost bank accounts, have a registered pharmacist check their medications for possible drug interaction, learn safe gardening skills from occupational and physical therapists and get financial advice.

Free door prizes, including a flat screen television donated by Livingston Hills Nursing and Rehab Center, were given out. Free food and refreshments and wonderful entertainment by the Philmont Community Chorus and the Rip Van Winkle Brass rounded out the day.

“I have been privileged to host this free event for the past 16 years and have watched it grow more popular each year,” said Senator Saland. “Many seniors tell me they eagerly await the Golden Gathering as their most anticipated fall event. It’s a place to obtain valuable information, get free health screenings and meet new friends.”

Saland added, “I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Columbia-Greene Community College for providing a wonderful venue for the Golden Gathering and to all those whose hard work and dedication makes this event a success year after year. But mostly I would like to thank the senior citizens of Columbia County who join us every year for the Golden Gathering – they’re the ones who really make this event a success!”
