New law can seal felons' records

Legislators, DAs are contesting reforms made to drug laws

Local district attorneys and legislators are among a group calling for a change to a recently passed state law that would allow criminals to have up to four drug-related convictions wiped from their criminal records.

The new law is part of the state’s reform of the Rockefeller-era drug statutes. It allows people convicted of 51 separate crimes, ranging from petit larceny to “operating as a major (drug) trafficker,” to petition courts to seal records related to one felony conviction and up to three misdemeanors.
