Sen. Brian X. Foley To Meet With School Superintendents, Stand Against Funding Cuts

Hauppauge, NY – Senator Brian X. Foley, a member of the Senate Education Committee, announced today that he will be taking a critical look at the Governor’s proposed education cuts, with a focus on alleviating the fiscal burdens to be faced by Long Island schools. To better assess the needs of individual school districts, Sen. Foley is meeting with superintendents and board presidents from every school in the 3^rd Senate District.

Foley, a member of the Senate Education Committee, announced today that he will be taking a critical look at the Governor’s proposed education cuts, with a focus on alleviating the fiscal burdens to be faced by Long Island schools. To better assess the needs of individual school districts, Sen. Foley is meeting with superintendents and board presidents from every school in the 3 Senate District.

"While we fully support the Governor in his efforts to balance the budget and deal with the current economic crisis, we must ensure that our schools have the resources needed to educate our children," said Foley. "We will work with every school district to determine their specific needs and help them overcome the challenges they are facing.

"As we proceed with budget deliberations, there are two priorities that must be on the forefront: providing Long Island schools with the funding they need and controlling the tax burden on home owners," said Foley.

Meetings between Sen. Foley and representatives from individual school districts are set to begin in February. "I am eager to build a partnership with Sen. Foley and work towards meeting the needs of my school district and helping our students succeed" said Dr. Craig Carr, Superintendent of the Central Islip School District.

Sen. Foley is working with the Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and other members of the senate majority to reform the governor’s proposed cuts and ensure that the needs of working families are addressed.

"Every parent and every taxpayer should be troubled by these proposed cuts," said Sen. Craig M. Johnson. "I applaud Sen. Foley for hitting the ground running and for being my partner in the fight to ensure that Long Island schools continue to receive the resources they need to provide our children with the quality education they deserve."

In addition to being the only majority member from Suffolk County on the Education Committee, Sen. Foley serves on the Higher Education Committee, and is Chairman of the powerful Senate Banking Committee.
