Sen. Fuschillo & Cablevision teach Merrick students how to be "internet smart"

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently partnered with Cablevision to teach 7th and 8th grade students at Merrick Avenue Middle School in Merrick about how to protect themselves while using the Internet by becoming “Internet Smart.”

    “Children are using the Internet more and more to socialize with their friends, but they need to know that what they post online today can have consequences down the road. This program helped students understand how to enjoy the Internet safely by teaching them about the dangers that exist,” said Senator Fuschillo.

    Senator Fuschillo talked with the students about being careful when posting information and pictures on the Internet, especially on websites such as YouTube and Facebook. Senator Fuschillo noted that this information can remain in cyberspace for long periods of time where it can be seen by almost anyone, including college admissions officers, prospective employers, and even criminals.

    At the event, students also talked about the subject of “cyberbullying” and the impact it has on someone’s life.  As part of the program, students presented a multi-faceted program that included student-produced educational posters, the performance of two educational skits and the presentation of a mock Jeopardy game.  They also explained what they learned from the case study dealing with cyberbullying found on Cablevision’s Power to Learn website (www.powertolearn.com).
