SENATOR FUSCHILLO JOINS HUNDREDS OF RESIDENTS IN FIGHTING DRUNK DRIVING AT MADD-LONG ISLAND’S “WALK LIKE MADD” EVENT

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently joined with hundreds of volunteers at MADD-LI’s “Walk Like MADD” event to fight drunk driving.

The event, which was held at Farmingdale State College, raised over $130,000 to help support MADD’s programs for victims of drunk driving as well as programs to help prevent drunk driving and underage drinking.

Senator Fuschillo thanked the walkers for their efforts and congratulated MADD-LI President Denna Cohen and Executive Director Thomas McCoy for all their hard work in putting the event together.

Senator Fuschillo also informed the walkers about his efforts to pass a new state law requiring all convicted drunk drivers to use ignition interlocks in their vehicles. Ignition interlocks are breath test devices linked to a vehicle’s ignition system.  Before starting their vehicle, the offender must first blow into the interlock.  The interlock will prevent the car from starting if it detects alcohol in the driver’s breath.  Interlocks have been proven to reduce repeat drunk driving offenses by an average of 64 percent according to MADD.
