SENATOR FUSCHILLO JOINS TOWNS OF BABYLON AND HUNTINGTON IN ANNOUNCING PLANS FOR INNOVATIVE TRANSIT SYSTEM FOR ROUTE 110

         State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8^th Senate District) recently joined with Town of Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone, Town of Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone, and representatives from the MTA-LIRR in announcing plans to develop a new system to improve transportation along the Route 110 Corridor, which would encourage economic development and job creation.

         “The Route 110 Corridor plays a vital role in Long Island's economy. Easing travel along the Route 110 Corridor through improved mass transit will help make the area more accessible and encourage continued economic development, which will attract new businesses and create new jobs for local residents,” said Senator Fuschillo.

         The Town of Babylon is currently requesting proposals to conduct zoning analysis, community based planning, and development of a visual representation of a bus rapid transit system to ease travel along the Route 110 Corridor. Senator Fuschillo secured $150,000 in state funding for the study.

         The bus rapid transit system, which would be the only north-south connection on Long Island, would help improve travel through the area and reduce the number of cars on Route 110. It is estimated that 50,000 cars travel on Route 110 every day.

         A recent Newsday editorial supported efforts to create a bus rapid transit system along Route 110, noting that traffic in the area is “too often horrendous” and “for those who think of it as the 110 horrordor, this study could be the beginning of a way out of the jam.”

         The Route 110 Corridor is home to 135,000 jobs, which equals 20% of Suffolk County’s workforce. Many different businesses and retailers, as well as Republic Airport and Farmingdale State College, are located along the Corridor.
