SENATOR FUSCHILLO JOINS VILLAGE OF FREEPORT IN HONORING NEW YORK JETS PLAYER AND FREEPORT ALUMNUS D’BRICKASHAW FERGUSON

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8^th Senate District) today joined with the Village of Freeport in honoring New York Jets player and Freeport High School alumnus D’Brickashaw Ferguson. In honor of D’Brickashaw’s accomplishments and charitable efforts, the Village dedicated South Ocean Avenue, the street on which he grew up, as “D’Brickashaw Ferguson Way.”

“D’Brickashaw Ferguson is a great success story because he shows how hard work and dedication can lead to great things. He is also a perfect example of someone using their success to give back to the people of their community. The entire community takes pride in D’Brickashaw’s accomplishments and I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor,” said Senator Fuschillo.

Senator Fuschillo joined with several other local officials at the dedication ceremony, including Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick, Assemblyman Dave McDonough, Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Town Clerk Mark Bonilla, and Legislator Dave Denenberg. Leaders from other Freeport community organizations were also on-hand to honor D’Brickashaw.  

D’Brickashaw graduated from Freeport High School in 2002 where he won several awards including the Thorpe Award as Long Island’s best high school football player and the Martone Award for best lineman. He went on to play at the University of Virginia, where he earned All-American and All-ACC first team honors and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in religious studies.

After college, D’Brickashaw was drafted by the Jets as the fourth overall pick in the 2006 draft. He earned All-NFL rookie honors in his first year and has started every game of his NFL career.

Off the field, D’Brickashaw is very active in charitable endeavors and giving back to the community. He founded the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation, an organization which offers scholarships to students and provides assistance to food banks, clothing ministries, and churches. He donates time to numerous other worthy causes and also assists at football camps by offering instruction and guidance to young players. He also makes time to participate in “Parents as Reading Partners,” at his old elementary school, Atkinson Elementary School.
