SENATOR FUSCHILLO, SENATOR JOHNSON, AND ASSEMBLYMAN SWEENEY HONOR COPIAGUE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM ON CAPTURING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), State Senator Owen Johnson (R-Babylon), Assemblyman Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) today visited Copiague High School to honor the Girls Varsity Basketball Team for capturing the Class AA State Championship.

Senator Fuschillo, Senator Johnson, and Assemblyman Sweeney presented each of the players and coaches with a legislative resolution they sponsored in the State Legislature honoring the team’s accomplishment.

The Copiague Eagles’ Varsity Basketball Team finished the season with an overall record of 22 wins and only 4 losses. The Eagles captured the state title by defeating Bethlehem High School, 74-58, in the championship game. This was the team’s first state championship since 2003.

Team members Ieasia Walker, Nicole Brown, Rena Brown, Judith Pierre, Charde Locket, Gabby Gibson, Dominique Smith, Chelsea Williams, Raven Walker, Sallie Thomas, Christina Adu, Domyae Ivory-Byrd, and Hannalee Fordyce each contributed to the team’s success. The team was lead by Head Coach Carole Olsen, Assistant Coaches Yvan Garcia, Lisa Macchia, and JV Coach Mike Ferretti.

“Under the leadership of their coaches and through teamwork, skill, and an enormous amount of practice and hard work, these girls became one of the elite teams in New York State. They are a great source of pride for both the Copiague School District and the Copiague community, and we are proud to congratulate them on this incredible achievement,” said Senator Fuschillo.
