Students at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick recently welcomed State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) to their school for a demonstration of their “SMART Board” technology. Senator Fuschillo secured state funding for the North Merrick School District to purchase the educational technology.

SMART Boards are touch sensitive, computerized blackboards which allow teachers to incorporate the Internet, videos, and manipulate text as part of their lessons. Teachers can also have students actively participate in a lesson by having them use the SMART Boards to search the Internet, write text, or draw diagrams in front of the class.

During Senator Fuschillo’s visit, students showed how the interactive nature of the SMART Boards helped them learn different math and science lessons. Teachers at the school also told Senator Fuschillo how the technology greatly improved their ability to keep children’s attention because the devices keep students more engaged and actively involved in the lessons.

“Students and teachers both benefit from this interactive educational technology. By getting students to actively participate in lessons, SMART Boards help make learning fun and help keep children focused on the material. It was great to see how the children enjoyed using the SMART Boards and how excited they were about learning,” said Senator Fuschillo.
