Johnson: ferry report signals need for authority reform

Sen. Craig Johnson said his Committee on Investigations and Government Operations’ report on the expensive mistake made by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corp., which bought a ferry it never used, shows the need for reform of the public authorities.
He also blasted GIPEC for making a “disingenuous apology for the purchase of a rusted and unusable ferry in a debacle that wasted nearly $900,000 in taxpayer funds.”
Johnson’s comments came today after seeing the state corporation’s public statement in the wake of his committee’s critical report of the purchase of the Islander ferry, which was unloaded on eBay for $23,600 earlier this year.
