Savino Hosts Black History Month Celebration

New York— State Senator Diane J. Savino hosted today the 2nd Annual Black History Month Celebration, "Possibilities, Opportunities and Hope for our Community". The event, co-sponsored by the College of Staten Island, featured keynote speaker NYC Comptroller William C. Thompson, dancers, musical performances, spoken word, a jazz ensemble and step dancers. Curtis High School Principal, Aurelia Curtis, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Staten Island residents were also honored, including Theodora Berksteiner, President of the Staten Island African American Political Association and local entrepreneur, Sean White, owner of the Against Da Grain Barbershops.

"When we celebrate Black History Month, we are not just remembering the injustices that the African American community has suffered or the lack of political representation. We are also celebrating the contributions of an entire people who have been part of this country since almost the beginning. We are all part of the same America. We share our history. We share our culture. We are enriched by one another. That is what makes us uniquely American," said Senator Savino.
