Senator Adams: Make It A Priority To Attend ‘college Goal Sunday’

State Senator Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn) today encouraged high school seniors and their families to attend an upcoming one-day special event that will offer help in completing and electronically filing federal aid applications.

College Goal Sunday is a national initiative that is hosted locally by the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association (NYSFAAA) and the New York State Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC). This event has helped thousands of families gain access to higher education opportunities.    

“When it comes to getting ready for college, many students and their families think about filling out college applications, writing admissions essays and making campus visits,” Senator Adams said. “An equally important component of the process is obtaining financial aid, and it starts with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. If you’re a student seeking financial aid, such as grants, work-study funds and loans, you can’t afford to put it off.”   

This year, NYSFAAA and HESC have once again teamed up to host College Goal Sunday at numerous locations throughout the state, including Medgar Evers College, 1650 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, on Sunday, February 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  

“Navigating the application process for financial aid is a daunting task,” the Brooklyn lawmaker said. “It helps to have experts who are experienced in the process lend a helping hand. And the best part is that it is free of charge, so you and your college-bound child have no excuse to not attend and take advantage of this great program.”

Senator Adams encouraged interested students and their families to visit www.collegegoalsundayny.com to prepare for College Goal Sunday. The website includes a step-by-step checklist detailing the process of pulling together necessary forms and information and completing the documents families will need to bring to the event.

“It takes lots of hard work to get into college, not just academically, but financially as well,” Senator Adams concluded. “Anything that makes the journey smoother is worth checking out. Getting help with your financial aid application takes one big obstacle out of your way, so you can focus on the rest of the college selection process.”
