Herkimer County Pistol License System On Target

HERKIMER, 12/09/09 -- Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) joined law enforcement officials today for a demonstration of the new Herkimer County sheriff’s computer based pistol license and weapons tracking program. 

“Herkimer County is one of only a handful of counties across the state utilizing this new, cutting-edge technology to issue pistol licenses,” said Senator Seward.  “The system reduces paperwork for local officials while enhancing record keeping and streamlining the registration process for qualified gun owners.”

Senator Seward secured a $10,000 grant as part of the 2008-09 state budget for the new computer system.  The award is administered by the state Department of Criminal Justice Services.  Funding is provided through the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program, the purpose of which is to improve the state’s criminal justice system and support local law enforcement efforts.

“The new system increases efficiency in the issuance of pistol licenses both for our office and license applicants,” said Herkimer County Sheriff Chris Farber.  “We appreciate Senator Seward’s  continued support.”

A pistol license may be issued to a state resident upon a judge’s approval following an extensive background investigation that may take up to six months.

“Local governments across the state  are searching for innovative ways to provide necessary services while keeping costs in check.  I am pleased to assist Herkimer County in accomplishing that goal without additional cost to taxpayers,” Seward concluded.
