Senator Seward Joins Greene County In Supporting Autism Awareness

COXSACKIE - More than 250 supporters of autism awareness came out Sunday afternoon to walk for the cause in Coxsackie.

The walk kicked off just after 2 p.m. in front of the Coxsackie Village Hall on Mansion Street, with Autism Connection of Greene County President CarolAnn Luccio leading the way.

Greene County legislators were also on hand to present a check for $3,080 from the Greene County Youth Fund to The Autism Connection. The check is part of a total of $5,580 provided by Greene County.

State Sen. James Seward, R,C,I-Oneonta, was also on hand to applaud the efforts of the local organization.

"It's hard for families dealing with autism or any other disability for that matter," Seward said. "The Autism Connection has emerged as a wonderful resource."

Last weekend, The Autism Connection was supported by one of the West Athens - Lime Street Fire Department's monthly breakfasts where $1,160 in funds were raised for the organization.

"I'm so grateful for the fire department and the work they put in," Luccio said after the incredible turnout at the breakfast.

The walk held on Sunday was further encouragement for her as Greene County residents came out in force to support the cause.

The funding received Sunday will be used for two programs this summer and fall to support families impacted by autism.

The first program will be a two-week social skills camp for children with autism, hosted by the Greenville Central School District and open to all Greene County residents. Dates for the skills camps are July 13 to 24 and will cater to teenagers and elementary age children.

The second program will be available to parents and caregivers affected by autism. Special education courses will be made available locally for parents so they do not have to travel outside the county. The classes are planned for September.
