Serrano at Island Kids Celebration

José M. Serrano

Senator Serrano was on Roosevelt Island for the culmination of the Island Kids Summer Camp. The camp is for children ages 5 to 13, and its programming includes swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, culinary arts, and weekly field trips. This program offers partial and full scholarships to low-income families, who might otherwise not be able to participate. The 2009 season kicked off on July 7th, and there was an upbeat closing ceremony on August 26th.

The children enjoyed a variety of exciting activities including a petting zoo, and a courtyard pizza and ice cream party. The afternoon culminated in a showcase of the various programs in which the Island Kids participated throughout the summer.

“As a fervent advocate for arts education, it is a pleasure to see these children being exposed to arts disciplines at such a young age,” said Senator Serrano. “Programs such as these broaden their horizons, thereby creating options for future success.”
