Serrano Marches in the 52nd Annual Puerto Rican Parade

Senator Serrano made his annual trek up Fifth Avenue during the Puerto Rican Day Parade, which was held on Sunday, June 14. The parade, which attracts more than one million people, celebrate the history and culture of the Puerto Rican people.

“I am never more proud of my Puerto Rican heritage than I am on this day,” said the Senator, who joined his father, Congressman José E. Serrano, on the parade route. “Today we come together as one community, united in our strength, our priniciples and the extraordinary contributions we have made to this city.”

He added: “We are a unique and exceptional community, though one that has forged incredible partnerships across ethnic and religious lines. In recognizing our differences, we also celebrate our capacity to unite with others – on everything from civil rights to social justice.”

The Senator’s attachment to his community is reflected in his work as an elected official. He has introduced bills in Albany to provide linguistic assistance to public school parents and expand cultural competency in hospitals. As Chair of the Senate Cultural Affairs Committee, Serrano advocates for the arts in a way that fosters greater social consciousness and cross-cultural understanding.
