Neighbors Helping Neighbors During Local NYC Disasters

-- One day of training – a lifetime of rewards! –

New York, Oct. 27, 2008 – A comprehensive one-day training program to prepare Brooklyn residents to become certified American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) volunteers so they can work at emergency shelters operated by ARC/GNY will be offered Oct. 26 and Nov. 13. The training will take place in Brooklyn at Mount Zion Church of God (7th Day), 203 East 37th Street bet. Church Ave. & Linden Blvd. on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 1 to 5 pm and on Thursday, Nov. 13^th from 5:30-9:30 pm.

Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke is Honorary Co-Host, with support from State Senator Kevin Parker, State Assemblyman N. Nick Perry and the nonprofit organization, We Are All Brooklyn.

Once trained, new volunteers may join together with neighbors in East Flatbush as a reserve disaster relief force to provide emergency services during large New York City emergencies such as coastal storms, large building fires, crane collapses and more.

This force will help augment the efforts of ARC/GNY’s Brooklyn Disaster Action Team, which responds to smaller daily emergencies, including fires, floods, building collapses and blackouts. Last year, the Greater New York Red Cross Chapter responded to more than 900 disasters in Brooklyn
