Senator Nozzolio Announces Postal Service to Reissue First Class Purple Heart Stamp

Michael F. Nozzolio

Albany- Senator Mike Nozzolio recently announced that the United States Postal Service will reissue the Purple Heart Stamp at the First-Class rate beginning this May.

The Purple Heart is awarded by the President of the United States to members of the U.S. military who have been wounded in combat or to the next of kin of those killed in action.

“The reissuance of the Purple Heart Stamp is wonderful news for our veterans and their families,” said Senator Mike Nozzolio. “However, it is my sincere hope that, in the future, the Postal Service will honor those service members killed or wounded in service to our nation with a forever stamp.”

Earlier this year, Senator Nozzolio supported a legislative resolution requesting that the United States Postal Service issue the Purple Heart Stamp as a permanent “forever stamp.”  The legislative resolution was adopted in the State Senate with unanimous support on March 10th.

The Purple Heart stamp image features a photograph by Ira Wexler of one of two Purple Hearts awarded to James Loftus Fowler of Alexandria, Virginia. Fowler was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marines and was serving as battalion commander of the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, when he received this Purple Heart in 1968 following action close to the Ben Hai River on the border between North and South Vietnam.
