Marking Women’s History Month, Several Women Will Be Feted at Bronx Event

A group of ordinary women that includes entrepreneurs, public school educators, civic activists and public servants were feted for their achievements and contributions to youth, elderly and the Bronx community when they received "Women of Distinction" proclamations and awards from State Senator Pedro Espada, Jr. (D-Bronx) in celebration of Women’s History Month. The ceremony took place at 6 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Bronx Library Center, Auditorium, 310 East Kingsbridge Road, Bronx, NY

The group of honorees includes former Bronx City Council member and long-time public servant June Eisland; Carmen Gomez Goldberg, President of Hayley’s Comet and C&E Affiliates, LLC, a school bus company; Lynette Santos, MsED, Principal of P.S. 33 in the Bronx; Sheena Wright, Esq., President/CEO of Abyssinian Development Corp., one of the most successful community based economic development entities in the nation; public school Principal Pamela Edwards; Rose Rodriguez, Esq., the Commissioner’s New York City Representative for the New York State Department of Labor; Ivine Galazar, District Manager of Bronx Community Board 6; Bernice Williams, 1st Vice Chairperson of Bronx Community Board 5; Maria Ortiz Ruemmeley, founder of Bronx Career Training and Placement Centers, which has trained hundreds of local residents for job placement; and Maria Rios, President of Classico Building Maintenance, Inc., a full-service janitorial company in the Bronx.

Our honorees have truly earned the title of ‘women of distinction’ through their personal and professional achievements and contributions as entrepreneurs, public servants and philanthropists," Espada said. "They educate and serve as mentors to our children, they tirelessly and unselfishly serve our communities, and through their commitment to our borough their entrepreneurial spirit fuels the local economy with jobs and tax revenue streams."

"Their success stories and the way they conduct themselves is something that our children should strive to emulate," he added.
