Hudson School Officials, Parents, Students And Senator Saland Visit Site Of Hcsd’s Alternative Learning Program

School officials, parents and students were joined by Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie), Chair, Senate Education Committee, for a visit to the new site of the Hudson City School District's Alternative Learning Program. Senator Saland secured $400,000 in special magnet school funding to assist students who have had difficulty in traditional educational settings.

"On behalf of the Board and the community of the Hudson City School District, I'd like to thank Senator Saland for his help in making this program possible," said Interim Superintendent Marilyn Barry. "With this funding, help is on the way for keeping our high school students in school and on track toward graduation, careers, and college."

After meeting with Hudson officials seeking supplemental funding to provide greater opportunities for at-risk students, Senator Saland was able to secure the grant to initiate a magnet school program. The funds are being used to hire staff and provide specialized training. In addition, a curriculum has been developed to create opportunities for project-based learning and accommodate the varied learning styles of these students.

"Magnet programs have demonstrated success in boosting achievement among students who are at academic risk," said Senator Saland. "I am pleased to have been able to secure this $400,000 for the Hudson City School District which will help those students who will benefit from this alternative program."
